CMS Member Profile – April 2016

CMS Club member Felix Piscitelli was born in the Bronx, New York back in 1930. He was the fifth born of eight brothers and sisters. In 1940 he moved to Worcester, MA.. Both his father and uncle were brick layers and carpenters who worked on the Empire State Building. At the age of 16, Felix became an apprentice bricklayer and at 20, he became a Journeyman bricklayer who traveled all over the Northestern states, wherever the work took him. He worked for the Worcester Public Schools repairing 105 brick buildings for over a period of 20 years before finally retiring in 1992, at the age of 62.
Felix had 7 children (4 boys, 3 girls), five (5) still living, ages 50 to 62.  His wife passed away in 1994 and thereafter, Felix discovered New Smyrna Beach through a friend. A year later he met Mary Etre and they have been together for 22 delightful years. In 1997, Felix joined the Coronado Shuffleboard Club and became very active in the tournament circuit. Felix participated in the Masters twice while he was still an amateur and played in the Tournament of Champions before becoming a Pro, five (5) years after joining the CMS Club. He was a member of our Club’s Board of Directors for about 5 years. He still enjoys being a “snowbird” but looks forward to coming back to Holiday Cove North to enjoy the surf-fishing, ballroom dancing, cribbage, bunco, yoga and the warmer winters.

We appreciate and are thankful for Felix’s continuing participation in and support of the CMS Club.

SPARC Community Activities

Wednesday evening, March 30th, the Coronado/Mainland Shuffleboard Club and the SPARC participants held their last get-together of the year to give out achievement awards, eat hot dogs, celebrate a birthday and play shuffleboard one last time together. Emily Furano, after receiving a birthday present, celebrated her birthday by sharing cake and lemonade with her friends.

The CMS Club partnered with SPARC to help provide recreational and sporting activities in our nurturing social shuffleboard community for those participants with developmental disabilities. Shuffleboard’s organized activities help to foster individual potential, new friendships and minimize isolation. Our shuffleboard club has been sponsoring a program with SPARC, with CMS member Bill Boyes as its coordinator, for at least the past couple of years.

We would like to thank all the CMS Club SPARC volunteers, such as: Bill Boyes, Joan Best, Arden & Mary McConnell, Jerry Jabaut, Paul and Marguerite Fortier, Connie and Gerry Bousquet, Johnnie Conner and Betty Buccini, for their support and involvement.

We also appreciate the involvement and support from families and friends of the following participating members:  Wayne Malcolm, Erick Harper, Sierra Harmer, Courtney Widdson, Ashton Tabor, Candi Smith, Emily Furrano and the three absent members, Evan Gorski, Tom Baker and Nate Urban. They all had a really good time and seemed to learn quite a lot about shuffleboard from the CMS Club workers who gave them friendship, guidance and support. We all look forward, once again, to our next season.

CMS Club Member Profile – March 2016

Bill Boyes and his wife Penny have been married for 50 years and have been members of our shuffleboard club since 2004. They are blessed with 2 children and 2 grandkids. Bill,  born in Toronto, Canada in 1940, has been a snowbird since 1990. His mother is an amazingly healthy woman of 103 years. Bill has lived for the past 30 years in Pickering, Canada. His occupation as a computer systems analyst and programmer was instrumental in getting the CMS Club BLOG started on the Internet for which I currently help to contribute to, eh?

Bill was president of the CM Shuffleboard Club for 2 years (2010 – 2012) and he along with his VP, Butch Green and Al Bessette, were responsible for merging the Mainland and Coronado Shuffleboard Clubs. Bill also saw to the complete redo of our shuffleboard courts during this time.  He has held many club leadership positions besides being a 1st VP of the Northern District. Bill has and continues to volunteer and give shuffleboard lessons to many of our new members over the years, Randy and I being two of them. He became a Pro and is a past Masters and TOC Champion besides being a part of the 2014/2015 winning Inter-City Tournament team with John Holder.

Bill also started and continues to be involved in the CMS Club’s collaboration with the special needs Special Program And Resource Connection (SPARC)  program.  This Organization provides social, recreational, and sporting activities for people with developmental disabilities to foster individual potential, new friendships and eliminate isolation.   https://cmshuffleboard.org/2015/03/29/connecting-with-the-community/

Bill has stated, “I am very proud of the club’s accomplishments, some of which I had a part in, and very happy to have been part of some teams of wonderful and hard-working people.”

Thank you Bill for all you have done and continue to do to support the CM Shuffleboard Club, it is greatly appreciated, for sure!

CMS Club’s SEASON Ending ANNUAL BANQUET – 2015/2016

There was an intermittent drizzle Saturday afternoon, March 26th, as approximately fifty (50) CM Shufflers headed for the Club’s end of season banquet. Earlier in the day volunteers set up tables and chairs while Johnnie Conner and her volunteer crew set up the beautiful decorations. We began with a social hour at 5:00pm, enjoying the club camaraderie, discussing the past season’s activities. Barb and Don Nephew greeted us at the door and collected the tickets for the door prizes. There also seemed to be a spontaneous gathering of women, like bees to honey, around Bud Barker. What is his secret?
Allen Best gave a welcoming speech and specifically mentioned the members from the Cribbage Social Group, led by Sid Pommainville. He and his wife started the group many years ago and when Sid’s wife passed away, he continued with the program.  Allen also mentioned that this year Bob Finta was unanimously selected as a club Life Member for all his productive years with the club.
Joan Best led us in a prayer and then the Pledge of Alliegence. That’s Amore’ catered and served  a nice dinner of chicken, tortellini, green beans with mushrooms and salad. They finished the meal with Tiramisu, a popular coffee-flavored Italian dessert.

Following dinner, Allen Best recognized the club members who had played in the Northern District Tournaments and placed and/or won awards. Bonnie and Randy Radke received hats for Most Improved player embroidered on them by Beach Embroidery. Allen also recognized Rex Galushia who had placed in the most tournaments during the course of the 2015/2016 shuffleboard season.  Wayne Lockwood came in second with the most tournament placements, but was unable to attend the dinner.

John Fortini, new Courts and Equipment manager, thanked the past Executive Board members for their service and then announced the installation of the new in-coming members of the board.

The door prizes, provided by local sponsors,  were drawn and many wonderful surprises appeared.  Carol Finta had knitted a lovely blanket that was given to Allen Best for all his hard work and leadership as our club’s past president.   Thanks to all our members for their participation (players and/or volunteers) in our club activities who have helped to make the CMS Club and our 2015/2016 shuffleboard season a success! Now we are looking forward to the upcoming shuffleboard season and our Club’s 80th ANNIVERSARY IN 2017.

NOTE:  Mary Harlow also wanted to announce the seasonal CMS Club Scoring Totals which seemed to have been overlooked at the banquet.

Felix Piscatelli was High Score for the Men, with a total of 898 points.
Marguerite Fortier was High Score for the Women with 608 total points. We appreciate all your efforts in contributing to our Club’s seasonal success!

NORTHERN DISTRICT (ND) MASTERS TOURNAMENT – March 23/24

The CMS Club did quite well at the ND Masters Tournament held in Tavares, Florida. It is a great honor for shufflers who are recognized by being invited to compete against their peers for bragging rights and good old fun at the season ending ND Masters Tournament.

Tournament standings for the CM Shufflers are:

Pro Men match-ups – Dennis Buelk came in Third;

Pro Women match-ups – Edna Triplett tied for Second;

Amateur Women match-ups – Bonnie Radke came in Fifth;

Amateur Men match-ups – Randy Radke came in First;  Bob “Mouse” Wolven came in Second;  Rex Galusha came in Third; and Jeffry Luneau tied for Fourth. It should be noted that Wayne Lockwood qualified for the Amateur Men Masters but elected not to play.

The weather was ideal on both days and the tournament was managed flawlessly. Appreciation and thanks go out to: the Tavares Shuffleboard Club for hosting this event; ND Tournament Directors Donna King and Jack Wooten; and all the volunteers (pushers, workers, etc.) who made this tournament possible. Mary Ann Pabst, Grace Marlatt, Mona Carkmer and Walt Vilk from CMS also volunteered as pushers to support this event.

The tournament ending banquet had dinner, entertainment, presentation of Pro and State Amateur Pins, TOC Awards and Masters’ results overseen by Masters of Ceremonies Lorraine Layton, Jack Wooten and Pat King.
