CMS Club Northern District Tournament – Jan 14/16

This was the last Northern District Tournament to be hosted by the CM Shuffleboard Club this season.   Any Doubles For Pros and Any Doubles for Amateurs was held on January 14 thru January 16. Normally the Tournament takes place over two days but due to the rain on Friday, the final games took place on Saturday, January 16th. Our CMS club members and neighbors, Julie and John Rambo, from the Beachside Candy Company, sponsored this event along with our club. We had a very good turn out assembling thirty-eight (38) teams: 15 Amateur and 23 Pro teams.

Many thanks to Richie and Carolyn Burrell, the Directors from the Northern District, for presiding over this tournament.  We also need to thank our CM Shuffleboard volunteers for their top-notch support in setting up the courts, disc cleaning, re-beading the courts throughout the tournament and kitchen/clubhouse prep.  Arden and Mary McConnell, Don and Barb Nephew, Bob Stock, Johnnie Conner, Betty Buccini, Paul and Marguerite Fortier, Debbie and Durl Evans, Arlene and Jerry Jabaut, and Gerry Bousquet deserve a big thank you for all their hard work. No Shuffleboard Club which achieves success does so without the help of their volunteers.

PRO RESULTS for CMS club member participants are:

Main Event: 1st place – Darrel Harman and Bill Boyes; 3rd place – Stan Williamson and Walt Bartels (Deland); 4th place – Charlie Jones and Jerry Taylor.

CONSOLATION: 1st place – Edna Tripett and Tom Andrick;  3rd place – Pat Zern and Sigrid Reichert

AMATEUR RESULTS for CMS club member participants are as follows:

MAIN EVENT: 1st place –Jeff Luneau and Bob Wolven; 2nd place – Guy Godman and Bob Tager; 3rd place – Bonnie and Randy Radke.

CONSOLATION: 1st place – Wayne Lockwood and Rex Galusha; 2nd place – Grant Barrett and Tim Pergrem;

Congratulations to all our CM Shuffleboard Members for their well played matches!

Please Support State Senator Dorothy Hukill

This is a note from Bob Finta: Our State Senator, Dorothy Hukill supported our application for a grant to get some money from the state for improvements to our club about 8 years ago. The request was granted ($76,000) which embarrassed the City of NSB and the Community Redevelopment Agency to change their mind and support the project which they turned down. As a result we got about $150,000 to refinish all the courts, buy new scoreboards, paint the aprons to the courts, purchase a new heater and A/C unit for the clubhouse, and build covers for the foot of courts 17, 18, 19, and 20, also for courts 5 and 6. It paid the cost of the lighting system which didn’t work at all, and painted the cue house.

If possible, please mention this info on our website. Ask the members to vote for Dorothy if they are able.

If you are interested, this is a link to her website:  It is always good to support people who support our club.

Tournament continues Saturday Jan 16.

Due to the rainy weather today (Friday), the Northern District Tournament that started on our courts yesterday (Thursday) must carry over to tomorrow (Saturday the 16th).

Volunteers, officials and players all showed up made coffie, put out food goodies, and prepped courts this morning, only to have the rain move in about 8:30 AM. By 9:30 it was apparent that the day was a "wash out", and Tournament Director Richie Burrell (ably assited by Carolyn Burrell) announced the postponement. He also said that if it is not be possible to complete the tournament on this Saturday, it will have to be completed at our club on an available Saturday which is not already scheduled for a Northern District (ND) event, such as the Jan 23rd meeting. Tournament scheduling is covered in th ND rules.

Important Notice from the Nominating Committee

Members of the Coronado/Mainland Shuffleboard Club.

As I have been reminding you all at the various gatherings, this is again the year we must elect new officers and representatives of the club. As of this memo there are only two positions, two representatives, which will carry over into next year. We therefore need people for three representative positions, a treasurer, a secretary, a vice president, and a president. Thus far the nominating committee has identified two members who have agreed to run for representative positions and one member who has stepped forward to run for secretary. That leaves one representative position, a treasurer, a vice president, and president position to be filled. Should one of the present representatives move up to one of the officer’s position, that will require not one but two representatives to be elected.

Be aware that if there are no officers of the club there is no club. If there is no club you members that participate in tournaments will no longer be able to do so unless you go join another club. By joining a different club you have not avoided that issue since they too will be asking you to do that same things I am asking you to do: STEP UP AND HELP RUN THIS CLUB.

Nominations for positions on the board are due at the February meeting so as to vote at the March meeting. It is in your interest to be at the February and March meetings.

If any member considers any other member qualified to run for one of the open positions, I encourage you to seek them out and encourage them to do so.

The nomination committee:

Arden McConnell, Bill Boyes, Barb Nephew

FUN DAY – January 2016

January 9th was the first C/M Shuffleboard member only Fun Day that Randy and I had ever attended. It was really a lot of fun with plenty of laughs. We all appreciate the members who came out early to set up the courts, club house and kitchen.  Forty-eight members showed up at noon to a sunny afternoon before a light fog rolled in. Hot dogs, donuts, coffee and tea were served before Team Captains were assigned to different courts. President Allen Best provided the chips for drawing the 14 teams that competed in each one of our 20 tricked-out courts. Courts were set-up to let fly between the legs of a chair, bowling pins and concrete blocks. On some courts you could score on the lines, a blind shot, only on your subordinate arm, off a bungee cord, in the kitchen and much more. Teams with the most points placed for $ winnings. This month Don Nephew’s team won with 1590 points. The lowest score was 840 points, a considerable spread. We are all very pleased to see so many new members participating in the fun and games. Come join us next month for your fun and amusement!

Notice for February 1st

On February 1st there will be a new sign up sheet to the right of the door where we store our cue sticks. Because we have so many new members, it is necessary for us to see who has a holder for their cue sticks in the club house. If you currently keep your cue sticks locked in the storage room, please sign your name on the sheet adjacent to the number that corresponds to your cue sticks location.   When all those members currently locking their cues have signed up, we will be removing those cues that have not been claimed.   If you are out of town or are unable to sign the sheet, please let us know.  Thank you for your help with this matter.
