Executive/General Board Meetings – 03/05/16

Today was an important Executive/General Board Meeting because we were electing our Executive Board Members who will serve for the next two years. The Executive Board Members who attended had plenty to discuss which will be covered in the minutes to follow. Next year (2017) is the CMS Club’s 80th Anniversary which we will try to make a memorable year filled with notable events.
The General Board Meeting was attended by 21 members (other than the Exec. Board). We discussed the Annual End of Year Banquet with an emphasis on the menu. It will be catered by That’s Amore’ on March 26th starting with a social hour at 5:00 pm followed by dinner at 6:00 pm. Please BYO alcoholic beverage for dinner.  Soft drinks, cups, plates and silverware will be supplied.  The dinner tickets are available at $20 per person and can be purchased from Bonnie, Joan, Johnnie, Candy, John or Barb Fortini. Please try to purchase your tickets by March 23 so That’s Amore’ will have a head count for dinner.
Monday, April 1st, our New Seasonal Daily Play will now begin at 10:00 am (instead of 1:30 pm) so please come to the courts no later than 9:45 am so we can prep the courts and get the teams picked.
Thursday, April 7th starting at 9:00 am (please come to the courts no later than 8:45 am so we can prep the courts and get the teams picked) we will begin our Summer Thursday Morning Four-Play which is open to all clubs, Pros and Amateurs.
Tuesday, March 15th has been scheduled as another work day to wash, wax and clean up the courts for the summer season.  We will need volunteers to sign up to help with court prep and clean-up as well as volunteers to re-number all the discs for the court play.

A well deserved thanks of appreciation to all the former Executive Board members and Congratulations to all our newly elected Executive Board members!

Upcoming Important Dates

Please remember that this Saturday, March 5th is an important board meeting. The Executive Board Meeting starts at 10:30am and the General Board Meeting starts at 11:30am. We will be electing the members that have been nominated to the Executive Board.  We need as many members as possible to participate.

For those members participating in the Inner City Tournaments, the final Tournament and Banquet will take place Monday, March 7th in Deland beginning at 7:30am for the final competition to be followed by the banquet so you don’t need a lunch.

FUN DAY has been changed to March 19th this month.  If you have not participated, please come on down and meet the challenge.  I have actually found that it makes my regular shuffleboard play better.

Also, please come join Dennis and the rest of us for Singles Mingles, only two more days left.  March 15th and March 22nd.  Register by 8:45am, play three games, bring your lunch to eat and then play three more games.  Usually done before 4:00pm.

I would also like to mention that as a club members you are welcome to participate in Majhong, which is held on Thursday afternoons at 1:30pm, Cribbage on Monday nights at 7:00pm, as well as Bunko following our Pot Luck Dinners.

CMS MEMBER PROFILE – February 2016

This month we are profiling very active CMS Club members Joan and Allen Best. Allen was born in Washington D.C. 66 years ago and Joan was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania 64 years ago. Joan and Allen have been married for ten years and have 3 children and 2 grandkids. They moved to New Smyrna Beach from Delaware where they both worked for Sears. Allen was at Sears for 40 years and Joan for 25 years. In 2008 through 2011 they were New Smyrna Beach snowbirds before moving here permanently in 2012 from Delaware.

They joined the CMS Club in 2011 and soon thereafter, having been successful in Northern District Tournaments, Allen became a State Shuffleboard Amateur. Allen Best also became the CMS Club President in 2014 for a very successful two year term. Allen, through his Presidential term, emphasizing team work, helping create club harmony and connecting with members, interested parties and our local politicians, has helped grow the club membership to 283 persons. Joan manages the Mahjong players on Thursday afternoons from 1:30 pm to around 4 pm. She also assists and plays cribbage on Monday nights at 7 pm. Bill Boyes is thankful to have Joan’s assistance with the SPARC program that is held on Wednesday nights. Our club has been in very good hands over the past two years and its future looks bright.

POT LUCK DINNER – February 2016

Friday night, February 19th, approximately forty (40) CMS Club members attended our Pot Luck Dinner for great chow and fellowship. The club event’s volunteers had already set up the banquet hall for dinner before Marguerite, Paul and their kitchen helpers set out the beverages and pot luck dishes.  There were some really yummy dishes (there is no such thing as too many deviled eggs) brought by our club members to share with others and some outstanding desserts (especially the popular “better than sex dish”).

Allen Best made some logistical announcements and also noted that Wayne Lockwood (looking trimmer before dinner) was back with us after recovering from his surgery. Social members, Tim and Salley Hickey, who enjoy the cribbage side of our club, also were in attendance. After Mona Carkner won the 50/50 thru the luck of the draw, Joan Best gave the  dinner prayer while we sat around our tables. Dinner, as usual, was plentiful and delicious.  Some of the club members stayed to play a few rounds of Bunko after enjoying a most satisfying meal.

MAYOR’S TOURNAMENT – February 16, 2016

It had been raining all night long before the Annual Mayor’s Tournament. At seven (7) AM the rain stopped and the sun started working its way thru the clouds. The local roosters greeted us on the courts before we started to squeegee them off in preparation for the tournament. Forty (40) excited players showed up to play and have fun. The nominal $2 entry fee per person was distributed as prize money. Marguerite and Paul Fortier arrived early to prepare the coffee and deliver delicious luncheon Tournament Cake. Kimla Shelton from the Parks and Recreation Department brought all of us some donuts to enjoy in the morning. Dennis Buelk supervised the tournament proceedings and it all went off without a hitch.

John Holder gave the prayer and Allen Best lead us in the pledge of allegiance. The Mayor, Jim Hathaway thanked us all for coming and received a brief lesson from Felix Piscitelli on how to “shuffle”. Sixteen (16) Pros and Twenty (24) Amateurs drew random disks for court and partner assignments before every contest. We played three games before lunch and then three more games after lunch.   The winners were as follows:  Pros First Place – Charlie Jones;  Second Place – Edna Triplett; Third Place – Wendell Henderly and Fourth Place – Tom Andrick.  Amateur First Place – Mary McConnell; Second Place – John Fortini; Third Place – Grant Barrett and Fourth Place – Allen Best. Congratulations!

Thanks to everyone who came out to play and have fun.

Fun Day – February 2016

Fun Day was sunny, clear and a bit chilly. Forty (40) fun loving members showed up to be challenged by our altered shuffleboard courts. Hot dogs, coffee and chips were served at noon before members were assigned to their courts and team captains. Many passersby wondered what we were doing having so much fun on our zany looking courts. Twenty (20) courts had been set up with a different challenge and/or obstacle. Sid Pomainville and Arden McConnell presided over and helped set up the diverse courts with the help of volunteers. We had ten teams, each with four members.   The nominal $1 donation per person was spread out so as to have all ten teams win something back in return. The winning teams were First Place (1350 points) – John Fortini (Captain), Paul Fortier, Robert “Mouse” Wolven, and Guy Godman.   Second Place (1340 points) – Rich Kordeleski (Captain), Ben Sharman, Bill Boyes and Randy Radke.  Third Place (1330 points) – Gerry Bousquet (Captain), Diane Woodhams, Bob Tager and Joey Shebester.   Fourth Place (1300 points) – Rex Galusha (Captain), Mona Carkner, Floyd and Terry Conley. We are looking forward to our next Fun Day!
