The Coronado/Mainland Shuffler

I have the results from the Northern District Any Draw Tournament in Deland held Feb 6/7, 2020. Thursday was a very beautiful morning and Friday was very cold. Deland had the courts in great shape and the coffee and donuts ready. We had Thirty-Eight (38) people sign up to shuffle and therefore, Nineteen (19) teams. We played frame games and Mary Ann Pabst was our tournament director. Deland was our tournament sponsor. Congratulations to all the participants especially those declared Coronado/Mainland Shufflers.  The winners were:

Tom Carbonell had scheduled an event for the Mid West Seed Company which is owned by one of our new members, Dan Funk. We had left the decorations from the Mayor’s Tournament so our club house looked beautiful. Dan and Friends began arriving around 3:30. We need to thank all of our volunteers for coming to give lessons and keep score for this event: Tom Carbonell, Betty Buccini, Johnnie Connors, Bonnie Radke, Cathy Kennedy, Mike and Karen Beall, Mike Darling, Zak Wonson, Allen and Joan Best and Joe and Kathleen Kasben.

They brought trophies for the winners.  Ninety (90) people registered for the challenge so we had 45 teams of people having a great time.  There were players on each end of all twenty courts and plenty of spectators on the side with the volunteers traveling back and forth giving lessons and coaching the teams.  Tom collected the winners names.

The day dawned beautiful but cool for the Mayor’s/Memorial Tournament. Tom Carbonell, Mike Beall and the court support team showed up early to set up the courts with banners for the Tournament. Sue Bancroft helped with the kitchen and Johnnie Connors had a wonderful display honoring the CMS members we have lost in the past two years.  We said goodbye to Ron Raymond, Mona Carkner, Bob Finta and Donna Toney in 2018 and goodbye to Bob Dove, Bud Barker, Don Nephew, Honey Donnelly, Mona Tibbetts and Darrel Harman in 2019.

Dennis Buelk took charge of registering the participants in the tournament and collecting the entry fee.  We had Twenty-Five (25) Amateurs and Nine (9) Pro/State Ams sign up for the challenge.

At 8:30am the Mayor of New Smyrna Beach, Russ Owen, came to open the event. The Mayor played the initial match with Sid Pomainville. Dennis explained the rules of the game and we all drew courts and partners.  We played five games recording the winners at the end of the match.  At the end of all five games we cleared the courts and came in for a lovely lunch of subs, chips, coffee and drinks as well as a beautiful cake from Publix.

Allen Best had the 50/50 ticket drawn and Mike Beall was the lucky winner.  Dennis read the results of the winners.  Congratulations to the Amateurs First Place, Tom Grubb, Second Place, Tom Carbonell, Third Place, John Fortini and Fourth Place, Betty Buccini.  Congratulations to the Pros First Place, Bonnie Radke, , Second Place,  Felix Piscitelli and Third Place, Bob Tager.  Everyone had a grand time and I hope this will encourage our amateurs to participate in more of our Tournaments.  See you all back net time.  Ciao!

The Nominations Committee is accepting nominations for the following positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and two Board members. All those currently serving, with the exception of President Tom Carbonell, are willing to continue in their position for another two year term.

If you are interested in submitting your name for any position please contact Zak Wonson at 843-295-2127.

The election will be held at the March Board meeting on Saturday, March 7, 2020.  It is important that you plan to attend this meeting.  See you there.  Ciao!

ALERT, ALERT
The President of the ND Lorraine Layton, and STATE delegate Doris Hanke would like you feed back on how your club shufflers feels about the 10 notices, that are posted on the FSA web. These notices of posted changes will be voted on at the March 14th State meeting. Your input will help us to vote in favor of what our district would like to see happen.

Also, election of officers for the ND will again take place at the March 28th meeting. The nominated committee of board member, Rod Lewis will accept anyone interested in any position on the board. All positions are open. Recommendations of a slate will be presented to the membership at the Jan. 25th N.D. meeting.

I went down to the Cue House this morning and saw that only 8 Shufflers signed up for the Mayor’s tournament. Where are yo’al? This would be a perfect day for all our AMATEURS TO PARTICIPATE and show your support. That also goes for our Pros.

The Mayor is coming…so let us give him a warm welcome. Hope to see you there at 8:15 am tomorrow. Prize money and lunch all for $2.
