MARDI GRAS PARADE – Feb 9th, 2016

Last night, February 9th, the CM Shuufleboard Club participated in our First Mardi Gras Parade. It was a typical chilly February Florida evening. Twenty (20) club members showed up in costume to help with final decorations before heading out to the NSB Mardi Gras parade starting line. A well deserved shout-out goes to Tom Grubb and his helper Susan McLain for supplying a cute three wheel pedal bike as “our parade float”. Also Betty Buccini, Johnnie Conner and others did a great job in preparing our club banners, in such a short period of time, in order to be used in the parade. Members marched and held the club banners throughout the parade. We all tossed out Mardi Gras beads, cheered, acted silly and called out to the parade onlookers to come join us to play shuffleboard. The parade was loud,  colorful and festive with throngs of cheering people all along Flagler Ave. from Columbia/N. Atlantic avenue down to Pine Street. Everyone had a marvelous time and we should consider doing this again.

General and Executive Board Meeting – 02/06/16

On Saturday, February 6th, we held our monthly Executive Board Meeting followed by our General Member Meeting. Many things were discussed which will be compiled in the meeting minutes and posted at a later date on the Web. The Executive Board meeting was attended by eight members followed by the General Meeting with an additional 20 members in attendance.

The nominations for the new Executive Board were announced and will be voted on at next month’s club meeting. The up-coming Annual Club Banquet’s details was one among many other future calendar events discussed.

In order to demonstrate our support in NSB town activities, it was decided that we would enter a club float for the upcoming Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras Parade and Celebration being held on Tuesday, February 9th. We will lead the club float with a CMS Club banner, carry our cue sticks, and toss Mardi Gras beads to the jovial hoi polloi in order to help promote NSB and our club. The parade will begin at the intersection of South Atlantic Ave. and Columbus Street and proceed for approximately seven (7) blocks along Flagler Ave.. Club participants should dress in any one of the festive Mardi Gras colors of purple, yellow, blue and/or gold. We encourage as many members as possible to participate. Call Tom Grubb 386-956-3478 for more details.  LINE UP FOR THE PARADE STARTS AT 5:30 PM.

Notice a Change

Please note that I have changed the date for the Mayors Tournament to Tuesday, February 16th. The Club needs to have a really big turnout for this to prove to the Mayor that we deserve to stay in our current location and that shuffleboard is something exciting to participate in for everyone.

Pot Luck Dinner – January

The CMS Club held this month’s Pot Luck Dinner on January 22nd. We thank all the club volunteers that showed up at 2 pm to set up the tables and chairs for the evening banquet. Marguerite and her kitchen helpers had everything ready to go before the main group of members arrived. People started arriving around five o’clock and the banquet table just kept on filling up with the most wonderful food. Allen Best started out the evening by wishing Bob Finta a Happy Birthday and then announcing that the CMS Club was presenting Bob with a Lifetime Membership Award in appreciation for his years of loyal and devoted service.

Betty Buccini sadly announced that the new “Senior Center” replacing the old Brannon Senior Center would not be the beautiful new building currently being constructed. The new building under construction would be earmarked as a convention center. The replacement senior center may be delayed for several years and will be constructed at a different location.

Following Betty, Allen Best had Bob Finta pull the winning 50/50 drawing  ticket which was won by Durl Evans.  Joan Best gave the dinner invocation followed by over thirty members lining-up to select and enjoy the sumptuous food. Everyone joined in the clean up after dinner was done. Some members stayed after dinner to play Bunko. So ended another enjoyable festive evening of fun and fellowship.

CMS Member Profile – January 2016

Pete “The Hammer” Peterson, an authentic Floridian, was born in Daytona 73 years ago. Pete, a veteran, was in the service of our country for four years in the Navy. After serving, he became a logger and subsequently joined the Florida Forestry Service to help care for our state’s forests. Among other forestry skills gained, Pete battled forest fires on the front lines by driving a tractor to make the fireline that kept fires from spreading. He worked his way up to become an elite “Strike Force” Fire Fighter. After 25 years of being exposed to radiant heat and flying cinders in the forest service, Pete retired. In 2004 he joined our shuffleboard club with the support of fellow CMS member Ben Sharman and in due course, Walt Vilk. Participating in the shuffleboard tournament circuit lead up to Pete becoming a pro a few years back. He has two children and six grand children. We are appreciative of Pete’s camaraderie and grateful for his service.
