The Coronado/Mainland Shuffler

Saturday, March 4th was breezy and bright. Some members showed up early, just after 8:00 am.  The usual volunteers and crew members were hard at work preparing the courts for play, decorating the hall, tables, making coffee and greeting friends as they all arrived for the celebration. Zack Wonson (Chair) and his  crew of Arlene, Barb Nephew, Cindy, Candy and Connie had done a great job of organizing, advertising and getting everyone involved. Marguerite, Paul, Mary, Arden, Johnnie, Betty, Candy, Honey, Rich, Felix, John Fortini, Jerry, Gerry, Joan, Allen and many others all deserve a fantastic thank you for a job well done.

Rich Kordeleski saw to it that all the courts were prepared early so as to have some members shuffling around 10:00 am. The populous began to trickle in not too long afterwards. They watched a little and then Arden and Cindy coaxed them onto the courts. With a little instruction, the games began and all seemed to be having a great time.

Jim Hathaway, our New Smyrna Mayor came around 11:00 am and read a Proclamation from the City of New Smyrna Beach Congratulating us on our 80th Anniversary and  honoring the club for it’s “on going, excellent service to the community”. The Mayor also announced that he had just become a grandfather to a beautiful baby girl. Congratulations!

The public came to watch, learn and enjoy the day which included cake and ice cream. Some participants joined the club as new members and some signed up to possibly win one of the five raffled memberships to the club.  Cindy Wonson will notify each of the winners in the next few day.  The winners were Linda Lamons, Charlene Giovanniello, Gerry Alsentzer, Jean Clementi and Mike Webber.  The day was fantastic with everyone having a great time.  A BIG THANKS FOR ALL THE MEMBERS, MAYOR AND THE PUBLIC WHO JOINED IN TO MAKE THIS DAY A WONDERFUL SUCCESS!

Congratulations to the members of the CM Shuffleboard Club who participated and placed in the Northern District Pro Only/Any Am Draw Tournament which was held in Tavares on March 2nd and 3rd. Teams – Eighteen (18) Amateurs and Sixteen (16) Pros from around the Northern District matched-up to make this a challenging event.  The sponsors were:  Van Gannaway Chev and Danny Len GMC.

The Event Director was Jack Wooten.  Once again, the tournament was very well organized and administered to.

Saturday, March 4th is our 80th Anniversary Celebration from 11:00 am till 3:00 pm. All members please come at 9:30 am to help get everything set up. Please remember to wear your Club Celebration Shirts. Anniversary Cake and Ice Cream. Everyone come help us all enjoy the day. It is going to be a bit chilly but we should have a lot of attendees from the town. See you there.

Fourteen (14) club members arrived at the club house at 5:00 pm to find masks, beads, streamers and a beautiful 80th Anniversary Banner donated to the club by Debbie Evans.  The usual volunteers, Johnnie, Johnnie’s Daughter, Betty, Marguerite, Paul, Mike, Gerry, Jim, Connie, Candy, Rich, Arlene, Jerry and Barb Nephew were all there to promote the club during the Mardi Gras Parade.  Rich and Connie were unable to walk the parade so they remained behind to set up refreshments for the others at the end of the parade.

At 5:30 pm we all walked over to S. Atlantic (in front of the Oceania Condos where the parade was being staged) to meet-up with Tom Grubb and Susan in their Peddle Car, which they had decorated for the occasion. There were floats with music, motorcyclists and many exotic costumed participants all being positioned in advance of the parade.

At 7:00 pm the officials kicked-off the parade and we marched up S. Atlantic to turn onto Flagler Ave.  There were so many people calling out to friends, imbibing on spirits/beer and begging for beads.  Such a jovial time.  It seemed that many more people attended this parade as compared to last year’s parade.  The noise and excitement was exhilarating.  As we reached Pine Street, Tom and Susan’s peddle car antics excited the crowd into waves of laughter.

At Pine Street we exited the parade and made for the club house where Rich and Connie had cool drinks and treats for the weary.  With sore feet and a happy heart we all headed for home.

Today Ten (10) Amateurs and Six (6) Pros got together to challenge one another in  shuffleboard. Supervised by Dennis Buelk who collected the entry fee and gave us the guidelines for five matches (twelve frames each). We drew a new partner after each match after which the winners recorded their scores. The day was hot and the games were brisk. After Dennis had tallied up the scores the Pro Winners were……First, Darrel Harman; Second, Dennis Buelk and Third, Rex Galusha.  The Amateur Winners were…….First, Paul Fortier;  Second Jean Tardif and Third, Marguerite Fortier.  Prize money was handed out and pictures were taken.

Tonight, Fat Tuesday, for the NSB Mardi Gras Parade, the CMS Club participants will all meet back at the Club House at 5:00 pm before heading out to the parade lineup at  5:30 pm.  Looks like the temperature will be in the 70s. A whole lot warmer than last year.

Just a quick reminder that this Tuesday , February 28th is Singles Mingles which starts at 8:30 am and goes till about noon. Entry fee is $2, which you get back in prize money. Please come join us. All Amateurs will be paired with a Pro (if we get enough participation).

Also Tuesday is Fat Tuesday, so come join us a 5:00 pm for a fun Mardi Gras parade that night. Everyone meet at the club house. Come in costume, throw beads and have a ball.  Espero verte alli!

Congratulations to the members of the CM Shuffleboard Club who participated and placed in the Northern District M/L Singles Finals/Dbls Tournament which was held in Deland on Feb. 23rd, 24th and 25th. Teams – Thirteen Women (13) and Twenty-Four (24) Men from around the Northern District matched-up to make this a challenging event.

This Saturday, February 25th is the (March) Executive Board Meeting/General Board Meeting. This is the last meeting of the season and will cover all the remaining events of the year. Also will be accepting the names of nominees for the Executive Board (two positions as Directors).  These positions need to be replaced or re-elected. Executive Meeting starts at 10 AM and the General Meeting starts at 11 AM. We will take a short break before daily play at 1:30. See you there.

Allen Best asked me to put this notice on the web. This year the Coronado/Mainland Shuffleboard Club will need Two (2) New Executive Board Members in 2018. Allen would like Anyone Who Is Interested in helping out our club to please call him or Joan Best at 302-841-0251 or Arlene Jabaut at 518-791-8020.  Every Two Years it is necessary for the club to have new volunteers join the Executive Board. This year Arden McConnell and Don Nephew are up for replacement.   It is up to the members to make this club run smoothly. Thanks for your interest in our club.  Please let them know before the next Executive Board Meeting on Feb 25th.  Since the 80th Anniversary celebration is scheduled for March 4, which would be the date of the next meeting, Mr. Best said that the March meeting has been moved to February 25th .
