The Coronado/Mainland Shuffler

Tom Carbonell and I set up the tables early for our Pot Luck Dinner. We miss Johnnie and all her lovely decorations. Everyone began arriving for our social time around 5:00 pm.  Marguerite and Paul arrived early and had the coffee going and the kitchen and tables prepped for receiving the food.  Many delicious kinds of food with wondrous scents filled the air. Thank you Tom for the wonderful pork roast.  We welcomed many new faces and enjoyed hearing from everyone.  We had around Forty (40) people attend the Pot Luck.  Martha Ebert won our 50/50.  Joan said the blessing for our dinner before we lined up.  When we were done with dinner everyone cleared the tables and put the chairs away.  Many people stayed for a friendly game of Bunco.

Today started out to be sunny and warm for our Singles Mingles Challenge.  The usual clean up crew assisted by Sid Pomainville prepared the courts. There were Eleven (11) Pro/State Ams and Eight (8) Amateurs who came for the challenge. Dennis Buelk collected the entry fee and explained the rules. We played four games recording the winners after each match. We could not finish the fifth and final match because it started to rain. Dennis then tallied the scores.

PRO/STATE AMS: First Place: Bonnie Radke with 200 points, Second Place: Randy Radke with 158 points, and Third Place: Darrel Harman with 143 points.
AMATEURS: First Place: Tim Pergrem with 244 points, Second Place: Tom Carbonell with 154 points and Third Place: Tom Grubb with 137 points.

Lorraine Layton (Acting-President) and the Tavares Shuffleboard Club hosted a Northern District Tournament Directors training class given by Carolyn and Richie Burrell. The shuffleboard club provided us with coffee and donuts for our class which took approximately three hours.   There was a good turnout with Fourteen (14) people attending the class.   Thank you!

Dennis Abbenante, our new Records Keeper for the Northern District, greeted us all and explained his plans for eventually doing all our records keeping and tournament data management through a computer/Iphone. He thanked Richie and Carolyn for conducting the initial training of Tournament Director candidates before they can be Certified. Richie and Carolyn will continue Directing some of our tournaments through the end of the season. Since Carolyn and Richie are retiring from their Tournament Director duties at the end of this season, Dennis took this opportunity to recognize them for their outstanding contribution to the Northern District Shuffleboard Association for all their hard work and dedication throughout the years.

Richie, assisted by Carolyn, started from the beginning and explained the manual paperwork preparation a Director does the night before a tournament. They instructed us in detail on what to do when they first get to and during a tournament in order to have it running smoothly.  The directions/explanations were reasonably easy to follow and I think most everyone left with a good understanding of what the Tournament Directors’s work entails.  The Tournament Director candidates will still need to successfully participate in a tournament overseen by Richie before they can be certified. Everything associated with this training session was well done. Ciao!

The weather was delightful for the Northern District Any Draw Tournament that was held in Deland Feb 7/8, 2019. Thank you to Deland for the coffee and donuts and having the courts all set up for our tournament. Thanks to Christine and John Giumarra and their Deland volunteers for all their hard work. We had Richie and Carolyn Burrell as our Tournament Directors with the Deland Shuffleboard Club as our sponsor.

Fifty-Eight (58) avid shufflers showed up for the challenge. Everyone randomly drew partners and courts before we played two very long competitive days of shuffleboard. We Congratulate and thank all the winners and participants who displayed respectful and exemplary sportsmanship.

Our dirty cleaning towels had been piling up for months when Tom Grubb came back to New Smyrna. He was quick to collect all of our very dirty towels and take them all to the laundry. He then returned them all and folded them carefully for us to use in the future. Thanks So Much Tom, the towels look great!

There was a Executive Board Meeting and a General Board meeting were held on Feb 2, 2019. I was not able to attend, but I understand about 20 people attended the meeting and I have attached the General Board Meeting Minutes GenBoardMinutes2219. The meeting was followed by our regular Saturday morning shuffle.  Tom sent me pictures to post and so I said the pictures you sent me Tom tell me that, “no one came to the meeting but everyone came to shuffle”?   LOL.   See you next month.
