Profile On Ben from Dec 2015

Ben Sharman became a member of the Shuffleboard Club 12 years ago and was a past CMS Club Vice President for 2 years before becoming President of the CMS Club for two years. Ben and his wife Elizabeth started coming to New Smyrna Beach (NSB) from Bethesda, Maryland in 1980 for only a couple of months before finally moving to NSB permanently around 19 years ago. They have been married for 46 years and have 2 children and 3 grand children (twin boys and a girl).

Ben was born in England (British citizen) 89 years ago, Elizabeth was born in Malaysia, their daughter was born in Indonesia and their son was born here in the United States. Ben immigrated to the US in 1949 and became a US citizen. He met and married Elizabeth in Switzerland, spent time in the Peace Corp teaching technical high school in Jamaica and among many other consulting endeavors (with a brief visit to Harvard), Ben became an International Trade Union representative. He and Elizabeth also took the ultimate cruise ship vacation by traveling around the world on the Queen Elizabeth II. What makes Ben’s accomplishments even more remarkable is the fact that he hadn’t even graduated from high school. If you have a little time, sit down with Ben to hear about any number of interesting stories from a man who truly has a far-reaching global life experience.

CMS Club President Request

Allen Best, our club President, has asked all the CMS members to make sure when we are done playing that the doors to the Cue House are locked. Apparently the doors were left open over the weekend and several teenagers were found playing swords with the cue sticks. We also need to make sure we are properly sweeping, beading and maintaining the courts and waxing the discs. If you are not sure of the proper shuffleboard maintenance, please ask one of our experienced members. Thank you for your attention to this request.

Thursday Morning Four Play – June 8, 2017

This morning started out very questionable after a night of rain. Ron Raymond came by to get us started. His crew cleaned up the courts and got them ready for play. The roosters were on the courts herding the four new hens while Twenty-Three (23) enthusiastic shufflers showed up, despite the threat of rain, to challenge each other for bragging rights. We recorded the winners of each game and once again, no one had won all four of their matches. Next week we will challenge each other again. See you then. Ciao!

I was just informed that Ben Sharman was visiting St. Augustine when he had some medical issues. He was admitted into the hospital and is in intensive care. Elizabeth, Ben’s wife, asks that we all say prayers for Ben. She will be letting us know more information as it develops. Ben just recently turned 91 years old and has been an active member of the CM Shuffleboard Club since 2003.

Thursday Morning Four Play – June 1st.

Ron Raymond was unable to make this morning’s Four Play so Tom Rimmer presided over this event. Tom and his crew set up the courts for the morning’s matches. There was some clean up from last night’s shower. Twenty-Nine (29) enthusiastic shufflers  showed up to compete for this week’s bragging rights.

We had four players who won all four of their games….Tom Rimmer, Al Bessette, Dennis Buelk and Bob Tager. Congratulations! Hope to see more shufflers turn out for the next Thursday Morning Four Play. Ciao!

Thursday Morning Four Play – May 25, 2017

Every Thursday morning Ron Raymond and his crew arrive early to set up the courts for play. This morning the night-time rain puddles were cleaned-up and courts prepared. Twenty-Six (26) shufflers arrived on this bright clear morning to compete in four different matches with four randomly chosen partners. Amazingly no one managed to win all four of their matches this week. See you next week to continue living the dream. Ciao!

May’s Friday Night Pot Luck Dinner

The May Friday Night Pot Luck Dinner was attended by Twenty-Two (22) hungry shufflers. We had three tables set up in the “Big Room” because it was air-conditioned on this sultry Friday evening. Joan Best pitched in for kitchen duty because Marguerite had gone back North. The food was, as usual, marvelous.

Al Best filled us in on the status of our new discs, which should be delivered sometime in mid June. Once again, Al thanked Wayne Lockwood for his generous donation that allowed the club to acquire the discs.  Joan collected for the 50/50 and also lead us in a prayer for those unable to be with us.  Then Bob Finta and his wife Carol lead us to the food table and we all indulged in a wonderful feast of culinary delights. Following dinner, Betty Buccini drew the winning 50/50 ticket. Once again Honey Donnelly won the pot. Finally all the tables were cleared, the dishes were washed and the chairs put away. The members who stayed to play Bunco decided that the “Big Room” was a much cooler gaming room. All in all it was an interesting and festive evening. See you next month for some more mouth-watering vitals. Ciao!
