The Coronado/Mainland Shuffler

This year our Annual End of Season Banquet will take place on Wednesday, MARCH 21, at 5:00 pm . The tickets for this gala will go on sale this Sat 24th (Fun day) for only $5.00 each. The CMS Club will be supplying the delicious Ham, Turkey and Roast Beef for this event while other attendees will bring  complementary side dishes.  The food side dish sign up sheet for this event will be in the Cue House.  We look forward to seeing most of you in attendance……Shufflers and Social Members.  Hope to see you all there to celebrate the end of a wonderful season that included our 80th Anniversary.  Ciao!

Donna Toney was a lifetime member of the CMS shuffleboard club, passed away on Sunday, Feb 11 at The Cloister’s Deland, Florida. No funeral arrangements at her request. A celebration of life will be held in March at her daughter’s in North Carolina.

Donna Spencer Toney, 93, DeLand, a dental hygienist in North East, PA before retirement, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018 at the Halifax Health Hospice Care Center, Ormond Beach. She was born May 24, 1924 in Westfield, NY to the late Walter A. and Margaret Knapp Spencer. She moved to New Smyrna Beach in 1986 from North East before moving to the Cloisters of DeLand in 2013. She was a member and past worthy matron of the Shiloh Chapter #153, Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years, the North East Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the Park United Methodist Church, all in North East and the Bert Fish Medical Center Bed Pan Band, New Smyrna Beach and the Cloisters Kitchen Band where she played the xylophone. She was also a member of the Coronado/Mainland Shuffleboard Club, New Smyrna Beach and enjoyed crafts, painting and Wii bowling. Survivors include her daughter, Robin T. Diehl of Hendersonville, NC; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Joshua Grubbs and three great grandchildren, Roman Darity and Katie and Skylar Schrecengost. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, George E. Toney and her brother, Henry A. “Stub” Spencer. A private family memorial will be scheduled at a later date. Cremation will be by Dudley Crematory, New Smyrna Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Northern District Mixed Doubles Tournament was held at Mid Florida Lakes Shuffleboard Club.  Thank you to Ron Theriault and his club for a well set up tournament.  They offered a hot dog lunch on the first day of play.

We would like to commend the Eleven Coronado/Mainland Shufflers who participated in this tournament.. Forty-Two (42)  ND teams took part in this tournament.  Congratulations to the CMS Members who placed.

This year for the Mardi Gras Parade the CMS Club Members decided to add a float to the enclosed tricycle Tom and Sue pedaled in the last parade. Rich Kordeleski provided his car and trailer for some members to ride on and throw beads from. At 3:00 pm the Decoration Crew went to Rich’s home to festoon the trailer and car. They then drove it to S. Atlantic for the parade line-up.

At 5:30 pm members met at the clubhouse to obtain masks and a banner before heading out as a group to the parade line-up. The day had started out OK but as the sun set while waiting for the parade to begin at 7:00 pm, it got colder and foggier with a brisk northeast breeze. Johnnie’s daughter, Cynthia, came with her car so that some of us had a place to sit down and wait. Cynthia also took some great pictures which have been added to the slide show below

At 7:00 pm the parade began with flashing lights, loud music and an enthusiastic, appreciative, friendly and sometime raucous crowd all along the parade route. We threw Mardi Gras beads to the crowd and called out to friends and acquaintances who were watching us go by. The parade is fairly short (approx. one hour +) and was over too soon. We had a great time and plan to join in the fun again next year.  Hope to see you there!

We missed quite a few of our regular CMS Club members today. Only eight (8) shufflers showed up this morning for the Singles Mingles Challenge. We each played five matches and only recorded our winning scores. While the rest of us cleaned-up the courts, Dennis Buelk tallied the winning scores.

Mardi Gras Timing Update:   Please be at the clubhouse at 5:00 pm to go over and line up for the parade.

Hi Everyone. Just a reminder that today is Fat Tuesday. We have Singles Mingles this morning at 8:30 am and we meet at the club house tonight at 5:30 pm to get ready for the Mardi Gras Parade that starts at 7:00 pm. It is a whole lot of fun, so please come on down and join us. Wear your bright colors, purples, blues, yellows, reds and greens. See you there.

Mary Harlow wanted me to let everyone know that the Morning Scoring will be permanently moved to 12:30 pm. Hope to see you there.

The Northern District Any Doubles Tournament was held in Deland on February 8th and 9th. We would like to commend the Seventeen Coronado/Mainland Shufflers who participated in this tournament.. Thirty (30)  ND teams took part in this tournament.
