Thursday Morning Four-Play – 4/21/16

The Thursday morning Four-Play was played in a  wonderful “10” plus weather day. Another shout-out to those volunteers who showed up early to cleanup and prep the courts for todays event. Thirty-six (36) committed players showed up to have some fun and participate in the challenging matches. The following three (3) Pro players were able to win all four of their matches; Tom Rimmer, Darrel Harman and Pete“The Hammer” Peterson. We all had a good time mixing it up with and against Pro and Amateur players. Remember, a Pro is just an Amateur having an outstanding day. See y’all next week for more fun and games. Ciao!

Shuffleboard Under The Lights On Flagler Avenue – 2016

Coronado/Mainland Shuffleboard Club members in New Smyrna Beach are shuffling “under the lights” at 6:30 pm every Tuesday and Thursday night on the the Historic courts of this  Local Landmark located on Flagler Avenue. It is not uncommon for the local foot traffiic to stop and watch the entertaining and friendly competition among club members as they demonstrate their skill and strategy.  Shuffleboard brings men and women together to play on the same teams or as opponents. We welcome new members. http://www.cmshuffleboard.org.

Pot Luck Dinner – April 2016

This was the last Pot Luck Dinner before our remaining Snow Birds begin heading back home. We have a few tentative Pot Luck Dinners scheduled during the summer in which we expect a significantly smaller turn-out. Members and guests started arriving at 5:00 pm to socialize while we waited for everyone (Approx. 30) to arrive for our 5:30 dinner. We were joined by Allen Best’s parents and Rex Galusha’s mom, who brought an adorable hatch of deviled egg chicks. Allen thanked everyone for coming with their culinary creations and hoped for them all to have a safe journey back home. Joan led us in giving thanks in all circumstances through the dinner prayer. The food was scrumptious and everyone had a delightful time. Many felt a little melancholy as we said our last goodbyes till we all can meet again next season. The evening ended quietly as we departed into the sunset. Pleasant memories will never diminish……. Hasta la vista !

Thursday Morning Four-Play – April 14th

After raining all night, a few CMS Club volunteers came out early to clear away the rain drenched courts in order to get them ready for Thursday Morning Four-Play. Twenty-Nine (29) avid players showed up to challenge each other in a friendly game of shuffleboard. The competition was really tough with nine (9) players winning three of their four matches but only three of them, Charlie, Dee and Tom, won all four. Come join us next week to meet the good-natured challenge of playing alongside your fellow shufflers.

Fred Pelletier picture from the Hall of Fame.

We were very sorry to read in this mornings paper about the passing of a long time shuffleboard club member, Wilfred (Fred) J. Pelletier. He was a member of the original Edgewater Shuffleboard Club and then a member of the Mainland Club which eventually merged with the Coronado Club. Fred has been playing shuffleboard for over 20 years. One of his long-time shuffleboard playing partners was Leo Gagnon. Fred had been President of the Mainland Shuffleboard Club and a Board member of the CMS Club. He was a Tournament Director for the Northern District and also served on their Board. Fred, as a Pro, was made a member of the Northern District’s Hall of Fame in 2011.

The Coronado Mainland Shuffleboard Club sends their deepest condolences to Fred’s family and friends. May he rest in peace.

FUN DAY – April 2016

Today, April 9th, we held this month’s FUN DAY. Forty-two (42) fun loving shufflers showed up at noon for hot dogs, chips, coffee, lemonade and sweet treats. We thank our crew of volunteers who prepared the kitchen and set up the courts with all their amusing obstacles. Joan Best collected for the 50/50 drawing and one of our new members, Nancy Tierney, won it with her winning ticket. Allen Best, Fun Day Coordinator, collected the $1.00 participation fee with the help of Barb Fortini. Allen made sure all the 11 Team Captains were on the same page. The sun was shining and all of us, including a few curious spectators, had an enjoyable time. At the end of play, the courts were cleaned and the disks were re-waxed. Everyone got together in the club house to watch Allen Best announce the standings.

We had point scores from 790 up to the Winning Score of 1410 for Don Nephew’s team (Paul and Felix).  Joan Best’s team (Jerry, Mouse and Terry) was Second with 1310 and Gerry Bousquet’s team (Darrel, Mona and Floyd) was Third with 1300.

Shuffler with the Highest Number of Points – 490, is Mouse Wolven
Shuffler with the Second Highest Number of Points – 440 is Darrel Harman
Shuffler with the Third Highest Number of Points – 390* is Candy Kordeleski

Each team took home a little piece of the prize money. CONGRATULATIONS! We look forward to the next Fun Day of shuffling.

* This score has not been double counted since Candy played twice on each court.  This is her best individual score.

Note:  Rich Kordeleski did a fantastic job putting in new wood slats for the two worn out court benches.  Thanks for all your hard work.

Daytona Beach News Journal Article – CMS Shuffleboard Club

The CMS Club has managed to promote itself through the article (below) that recently appeared in the Daytona News Journal on Thursday morning, April 7th.  We will continue to look for any news worthy occasion to promote the Club so that New Smyrna Beach recognizes the unique historic value of our active club on Flagler Avenue, especially in anticipation of our up-coming 80th Anniversary in 2017. “As the NSB Community continues to grow and expand, we want to continue to be part of it.”  Any recommendations are welcome.
